Act Poster

Typographic Poster | Collage

The creation of a poster depicting the word act as moments when intention interacts with choice, including small actions shape the direction of our lives. The challenge was to express this meaning through type, shape, texture, and color.

The Process

Research:

After researching the word “act” and its various meanings, I began developing a moodboard and typographic treatments to fit my message. I  began to decide on collage methods that would convey action as laying and building life. I researched different “junk journal” collages and collected type studies.

Drafts:

Using the moodboards as a guide, I created rough sketches to test collage compositions. I wanted to consider the visual movement of the collage without hindering the intuitive play of a collage poster. I began collecting materials from friends, family, and from my daily life to use in the collage, from receipts to wrappers. I also began photographing my collage experiments to edit them digitally.

Finalizing:

I began collecting my best experiments to have the correct materials to create my final. I focused on directional lines, a focused color palette, and balance between elements. I made final digital touches and then was able to print and display the work at 12 x 18 inches.

Project Walkthrough

I intended the poster to be read from the top left to the bottom left. The red circle at the top, surrounded by negative space, is intended to draw the viewer’s eye and suggest a sun or new day. The receipt leads the viewer down, resonating with ideas of purchases and maybe working or money. The next circle is white compared to the red circle, leading to the thought of the end of a day or a different day. The people jumping suggest movement and action, even risk, as they leap into the unknown. This leads the eye to the word act and gives a spot of rest.

The visual rest leads to the consideration of the word act and how it could connect to the other elements on the poster. The viewer will also see handwritten text, receipts, and torn paper, leading to the feeling of movement and action. The viewer is led down to the handwritten text and red edits and then to the final aspect of the composition.

The viewer’s eye is finally pushed to the text “Life is a series of choices. Today, yours are good ones.” This will lead the viewer to consider how choices impact the direction and quality of life. It will also contextualize the poster further and lead the viewer to leave the poster with a greater abstract understanding of intentions, interaction with choice, and how action impacts one’s life in positive or negative ways.
