The Benthic Line

To design a psychological horror title sequence for The Benthic Line that evokes deep-sea isolation and identity erosion through abstract black-and-white ink imagery inspired by cephalopod motion and forensic textures.

Objective:

The Benthic Line is a psychological horror film rooted in deep-sea isolation and the erosion of identity. Using abstract black-and-white ink imagery, the title sequence creates the feeling of descending into the subconscious or into the abyss of the ocean. Inspired by cephalopod movement, forensic textures, and ink plumes, the visuals are both beautiful and unnerving.

Subtle forms resembling tentacles or nerve endings emerge from negative space, suggesting a mind attempting to reconstruct something traumatic. The typeface, Knockout, was chosen for its clean, minimal, yet intense appearance. It fades in and out slowly, providing a contrast to the organic motion without distracting from it.

Concept:

To create the sequence, I filmed high-contrast ink-in-water footage and manipulated it using masking, time distortion, and mirrored compositions. I experimented with hand sanitizer, mineral oil, rubbing alcohol, and various ink and water techniques to produce different textures, often moving trays or using air to create motion.

My visual references included macro photography, marine biology, and experimental horror, with an emphasis on building tension through silence and form. The soundscape features layered cellos and clashing instruments, rising to a peak at the title reveal before fading into ambient water sounds and a black screen. This creates a lasting feeling of submersion. The process focused on evoking emotion through abstraction, allowing the sequence to act as a sensory descent into the film’s eerie, oceanic world.
