To develop a compact, map-inspired pamphlet that highlights the intersection of Karen Wynn Fonstad’s life and her cartographic achievements, incorporating handmade textures and annotations referenced in the article to reflect her overlooked legacy.

Objective:

The article “Overlooked No More: Karen Wynn Fonstad, Who Mapped Tolkien’s Middle-earth” covers Karen Wynn Fonstad’s mapping of Tolkien’s fantasy books and her impact on the larger fantasy community. She was never widely recognized for her achievements outside of the small fantasy community. I wanted the design to convey a balance between the map’s artistry and the life of Fonstad. I wanted to highlight handmade elements such as notes and diary entries mentioned in the article and use a compact fold to make the pamphlet reminiscent of a small map.

Concept:
